Of course, it bears repeating, that if this is for home theater use, you want a dark room. If you get a measurement of 30 nits, then to achieve a 10:1 contrast ratio, you would need 300 nits from the projector. The typical measurement for bright video is about 10:1 or greater contrast, so a proper measurement of light, at the screen, should be performed. This is fine for bright presentations such as PowerPoint, or just to watch some general television.ĥ0 lumens/square foot is about 173 nits square meter. My general recommendation is that you want about 50 lumens per square foot of screen space, or 80 advertised lumens, in a normally lit (florescent lighting) meeting room, to achieve a usable contrast ratio of about 10:1 or so. Dark images and dark movies take a SERIOUS hit when you add ambient light to a room. There is no such thing as an 'excellent image' in a room with ambient light. I suppose if the default calculation is doing that math per square meter, then all is good. I don't typically use nits as it's a measurement per square meter.
